Bluetooth-Bluetooth History

* Created By: Telecom Vendor Ericsson in the year 1994.

* The idea was to create a wireless alternative to RS-232 cables.

*The name Bluetooth comes from Harald Bluetooth, a king in Denmark.

*Managed by: Bluetooth Special Interest Group which consists of more than 18,000 telecommunication, networking, computer and consumer electronic companies.

*Operates in the range of 2400-2483.5 MHz.

*Performs upto 1600 hops per second.

*Generally send and receive data at the speed of 1 MBPS (approximately).

*One Bluetooth device can communicate with upto 7 -8 other devices in a piconet (a piconet is as ad-hoc network of computers which uses Bluetooth technology).

*Works on the principle of master and slave. The devices can switch roles i.e.., a device can be a master device to another device but again it can turn into a slave device to that particular device. The role is ambiguous. For example: a video game remote beginning a connection to a video game will begin as a master device but as the beginner of the connection, it may change its role and become a slave device.

*Uses a radio technology called Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum.

*It is a secured medium for exchanging information between devices such as telephones, digital cameras, laptops, GPS receivers etc.

*The range of a typical Bluetooth device is up to 30 feet or 10 meters.

*The main areas of concern for Bluetooth include security issues and interoperability with other networking protocols.
